Reconstruction After Oral Cancer

Rehabilitation is a crucial component in caring for a person’s well being after cancer. A person’s speech, swallowing ability, control of saliva and mastication can all be adversely affected by the tools that are used to help rid a person of cancer.

A prosthodontist is one of the several experts that should be consulted. This specialist will help with rehabilitation of the hard and soft palate by designing a temporary prosthesis to aid in recovery. Once all the tissue has been healed, a permanent prosthesis is fabricated. This obturator prosthesis is intended to help restore the physical separation between the oral and nasal cavities so as to restore speech and swallowing abilities back to normal for oral cancer patients.

Be sure to include the prosthodontist in your initial exams before cancer surgery.
