When I finished dental school in 2001 I considered starting my practice at that time; but the pull to become an expert at restoring function and beauty to the smiles of patients who have challenging dental health won out. I also wanted to become an expert primary dentist. The very best. The type I would want to have for my children, spouse and myself.
This decision lead to three years of additional residency training after dental school at the University of Iowa. The hands on experience from working with brilliant dentists, prosthodontists, and oral surgeons was invaluable. As a result, when I started my practice I was far more prepared. I now had "new eyes" and could see ways to help that I would have never been able to otherwise. Even for the most basic dental cases.
It is now 23 years later, and I spend a significant amount of my time doing specialty work for severe cases like I had planned. But, I am happy to say that I am also using my additional training to benefit families as their primary dentist.
